Frequently Asked Questions

No. This course is an exploratory course that is required of students who are directly admitted to the Smith School as First Year students. This requirement is waived for internal transfer students who are admitted to the Smith School later (and the Smith School recommends that internal transfers skip it entirely). Students have described this class as more challenging than expected, it is important to prioritize a strong GPA to make you a more competitive candidate for BMGT admission.

Accounting (BMGT220), Business Statistics (BMGT230), and Calculus (MATH120 or MATH140) are all challenging courses. If possible, you should only take one Gateway Class at a time to ensure that you can give it the attention it needs for you to be successful in achieving a high grade.

We don’t recommend students take BMGT230 in their first semester unless they have taken AP Statistics or a similar course in high school. We also recommend this course is taken in a different term than Calculus.

A student taking Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at the same increases the chances mixing up the materials on an exam. Additionally—these are both challenging courses! It isn’t a good strategic move to stack them together, particularly if you are also taking a Gateway Course at the same time. You can, however, take them out of order (for example, taking ECON201 first).

Both Calculus for Business (MATH120) and Calculus I (MATH140) will satisfy the Gateway requirement for the Smith School. MATH120 is 3 credits and a less-challenging class that is good for students for whom math is not necessarily a strength or passion. MATH140 is 4 credits and the morechallenging class that is best taken by students with a foundation in Calculus from High School.

**Please note: MATH140 is the most flexible option, as it can apply to a parallel major in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Science in Economics, etc. MATH120 may limit parallel major options later.
